Do you feel tired all the time even after a full night's sleep? Do you notice tingling in your hands or feet, forgetfulness, or a lack of energy at work? Before you accept that as normal, it's worth checking something simple: your vitamin B12 level. B12 deficiency is far more common than people think—and it's easy to correct when caught early.

What is vitamin B12 and what does it do?

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential nutrient your body cannot make on its own: it only comes from animal-based foods or supplements. It supports functions so basic that when it runs low, your whole body feels it:

  • Red blood cell production: without enough B12, red blood cells come out defective and anemia develops.
  • Nervous system: it maintains the protective coating around your nerves (myelin), which is why deficiency causes tingling and numbness.
  • Energy: it helps convert food into usable energy; constant fatigue is the most common sign of low B12.
  • Memory and focus: your brain needs it to work clearly.
  • DNA formation: it's involved in the renewal of every cell in your body.

Benefits of keeping a healthy B12 level

When your vitamin B12 level is adequate—or a deficiency gets corrected—most patients notice:

  1. More energy and less fatigue: the change people feel first.
  2. Better mood: B12 plays a role in serotonin production; low levels are linked to low mood.
  3. A clearer mind: improved focus and memory.
  4. Anemia prevention: healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen properly.
  5. Protected nerves: stops or prevents tingling and numbness in hands and feet.
  6. Metabolic support: your body makes better use of the food you eat.

Important: B12 is not a magic energy booster for someone whose levels are already normal. Its real benefit is correcting and preventing deficiency—which is why the first step is always measuring it with a blood test.

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms

Deficiency develops slowly, sometimes over years, and its symptoms get blamed on stress or "just getting older." Watch for:

  • Tiredness and weakness that rest doesn't fix
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Pale or slightly yellowish skin
  • A swollen, smooth or burning tongue
  • Memory problems and trouble concentrating
  • Mood changes, irritability or feeling down
  • Dizziness or shortness of breath with exertion
  • Balance problems when walking

If you have several of these symptoms, a simple blood test confirms or rules out a deficiency. We draw your sample on the spot and, in most cases, deliver results the same day, explained in Spanish.

Who is most at risk of deficiency?

Anyone can develop a B12 deficiency, but your risk is higher if you:

  • Are over 50: with age the stomach produces less acid, and without acid the B12 in food isn't absorbed well.
  • Take acid reflux or heartburn medication (omeprazole and similar) long term.
  • Take metformin for diabetes: this medication reduces B12 absorption—especially relevant in our community, where diabetes is so common.
  • Follow a vegetarian or vegan diet: B12 occurs naturally only in animal-based foods.
  • Had stomach or intestinal surgery (including bariatric surgery).
  • Have digestive conditions such as chronic gastritis, celiac disease or Crohn's disease.
  • Drink alcohol heavily.

Which foods provide vitamin B12?

Food is always the first source. The richest sources of B12 are:

  • Beef liver: very high
  • Fish (salmon, tuna, sardines): high
  • Beef and chicken: moderate to high
  • Eggs: moderate
  • Milk, cheese and yogurt: moderate
  • Fortified cereals: varies (check the label)

The catch is that eating well isn't always enough: if your stomach can't absorb the vitamin—because of age, medications or surgery—you can be deficient even with a good diet. That's where supplements and injections come in.

B12 shot vs. pills: which is right for you?

Pills or sublingual drops work well for mild deficiencies and for maintenance, as long as your gut absorbs normally.

The vitamin B12 injection goes into the muscle and passes directly into the bloodstream, bypassing digestive absorption entirely. It's recommended when:

  • The deficiency is moderate or severe, or neurological symptoms (tingling, numbness) have already appeared.
  • Absorption is compromised: age, metformin, acid-reducing medications, bariatric surgery, digestive conditions.
  • You need to restore levels quickly: the effect is faster and more complete than with pills.

At Clínica Hispana Mangum we administer vitamin B12 injections and also offer vitamin IV drips that combine vitamins and minerals with full hydration, administered by medical staff based on what your body needs.

How often is the B12 shot given?

It depends on your starting level and the cause of the deficiency. A common schedule is:

  1. Correction phase: weekly injections for the first few weeks, until your reserves are replenished.
  2. Maintenance phase: one injection per month, or as your medical evaluation indicates.

At your visit we define the right schedule for you based on your lab work; we don't dose blindly. And if the underlying cause is something else—thyroid, iron-deficiency anemia or a chronic condition like diabetes—the same blood panel lets us catch it.
