Sneezing every morning, itchy eyes in spring or hives after eating something: allergies are very common in Houston, where pollen, mold and humidity are around most of the year. With a good diagnosis they can be controlled so they stop affecting your sleep and work.

Which allergies do we treat?

• Allergic rhinitis: sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itchy eyes and throat.
• Skin allergies: hives, itching and eczema.
• Mild reactions to insect stings or foods, with a plan to avoid them.
• Cough or wheezing related to allergies, to rule out asthma.

How do we find what causes it?

The medical team reviews when symptoms appear, where you are and what changed in your routine. Often the pattern is enough to identify the trigger. If confirmation is needed, tests or a referral to an allergist are arranged.

How are allergies treated?

• Non-drowsy antihistamines and nasal steroids, which work best when used every day during the season.
• Creams or medications for hives and itching.
• Home measures: wash bedding in hot water, close windows on high-pollen days and control humidity to prevent mold.

When is it an emergency?

If there is swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or dizziness after a food, medication or sting, call 911 right away: it may be anaphylaxis.
