When you start an immigration process that requires a medical exam, you'll hear the term civil surgeon. Here's what it means and why choosing the right one matters.
What is a civil surgeon?
A civil surgeon is a USCIS-authorized physician who can perform the immigration medical exam (Form I-693) within the United States. Not every doctor can do it: they must hold this official authorization.
Why is it important?
Only the form completed and sealed by a civil surgeon is valid for your process. If a non-authorized doctor does it, USCIS won't accept it and you'll lose time and money.
What they do during the exam
- Review your medical and vaccination history
- Perform the physical exam
- Order the required tests
- Administer necessary vaccines
- Complete and seal Form I-693
How to choose the right one
- Confirm they are USCIS-authorized.
- Look for care in your language.
- Ask if they administer vaccines the same day.
- Verify they provide the sealed envelope.
