It is better to wait until it ends, because blood can affect the sample. Schedule your visit a few days after your period and before the next one.

What is the difference between a Pap smear and a vaginal culture?

A Pap smear looks for changes in cervical cells. A culture identifies which germ is causing an infection, so the right treatment can be chosen.

Can someone be with me during the exam?

Yes. You can bring someone or ask for another member of the clinic's medical team to be present during the exam. If you have a preference, call us at (832) 834-5507 before you come.

Many women put off their gynecology checkup because of time, embarrassment or not finding care in their language. At Clínica Hispana Mangum the clinic's medical team sees you in a private exam room, no appointment needed, in Spanish or English, and explains each step before starting.

What does the gynecology visit cover?

Pap smear and gynecological exam to catch cervical changes early.
Vaginal culture to find what is causing an infection and give you the right treatment.
Vaginal infections: yeast, bacterial vaginosis and other causes of discharge, itching or odor.
Urinary discomfort or pelvic pain, with urine tests when needed.
Referral to a specialist if a result calls for it.

How often should I get a Pap smear?

According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF):

Ages 21 to 29: every 3 years.
Ages 30 to 65: every 3 years with a Pap smear, or every 5 years when combined with HPV testing.

If you have had abnormal results, the medical team may ask you to come more often.

How do I prepare?

Schedule your visit when you are not on your period.
For 2 days before, avoid sex, douching, vaginal suppositories and creams.
Note the date of your last period and the medications you take.

When should I not wait?

Come in soon if you have discharge with an odor or a different color, itching or burning that does not go away, bleeding between periods or after sex, or lower abdominal pain. If the pain is severe or you have a high fever, go to the emergency room.
