Not every sore throat needs antibiotics. Most are caused by viruses, but group A strep throat does need treatment to prevent complications. The rapid strep test tells you during the same visit, no appointment needed.
When to suspect strep
- A sore throat that started suddenly and hurts to swallow.
- Fever.
- Swollen, tender neck lymph nodes.
- Red tonsils, sometimes with white spots.
- No cough or stuffy nose, which point more to a virus.
It is most common in children aged 5 to 15, but adults get it too.
What is the test like?
A swab is passed over the back of the throat for a few seconds. It may cause gagging, but it does not hurt. The rapid test result is ready in a few minutes. In children and teens, if the rapid test is negative but suspicion is high, a culture is recommended to confirm.
If it is positive
- The medical team prescribes the right antibiotic, which must be taken completely even if you feel better in two days.
- You can return to school or work once you have no fever and have taken the antibiotic for at least 12 hours.
- Replace your toothbrush when you finish treatment.
Why not let it go?
Untreated strep can cause abscesses around the tonsils and, less often, rheumatic fever, which affects the heart.
