Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all and can still lead to infertility or spread to your partner. Getting tested is a way to take care of yourself, not something to be ashamed of. At Clínica Hispana Mangum testing is confidential and the medical team treats you with respect and without judgment.

Which infections are checked?

InfectionHow it is detected
Chlamydia and gonorrheaUrine sample or swab
SyphilisBlood test
HIVBlood test
TrichomoniasisUrine sample or swab
HerpesExam and sample if there are sores

The medical team chooses tests based on your symptoms and risk.

When should I get tested?

  • If you have discharge, burning, sores, warts or pain in the genital area.
  • If a partner told you they have an infection.
  • After sex without a condom with a new partner.
  • The CDC recommends an HIV test at least once for everyone aged 13 to 64, and yearly chlamydia and gonorrhea testing for sexually active women under 25.

Some infections take time to show up on tests; if the exposure was very recent, a repeat test may be needed weeks later.

If the result is positive

  • Many infections are cured with antibiotics; others, such as HIV or herpes, are managed with treatment.
  • Your partner or partners should also be treated so you do not get reinfected.
  • Avoid sex until treatment is finished, as directed.

Prevention

Using a condom every time greatly lowers the risk. Ask about the HPV and hepatitis B vaccines too.
