- Results in Spanish
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) records the heart's electrical activity in a few minutes. It is a quick, painless test with no radiation, and it is often the first step to check palpitations, dizziness or a medical requirement before surgery or sports.
What is it for?
- Detecting rhythm problems, such as fast, slow or irregular heartbeats.
- Looking for signs of a past heart attack or lack of oxygen to the heart.
- Seeing whether a heart chamber is enlarged.
- Meeting requirements for pre-surgery, work or sports exams.
What is the test like?
- You lie down on the exam table.
- Adhesive electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs.
- You stay still and breathe normally for a few seconds while it records.
- The electrodes are removed and the medical team reviews the tracing.
The whole process usually takes about 10 minutes.
How do I prepare?
- Wear two-piece clothing so your chest is easy to uncover.
- Do not put lotions or oils on your chest that day.
- Bring a list of your medications.
What the EKG does not show
A normal EKG does not rule out every heart problem; it only records what happens at that moment. If symptoms come and go, longer monitoring or a cardiology referral may be needed.
Chest pain: do not wait
If you have chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, cold sweats or pain spreading to your arm or jaw, call 911. Do not drive yourself to the clinic.
